Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon and Team Bryan Herta Autosport (co-owned by Steve Newey) have been selected by IndyCar to test the 2012 prototypes of the popular American series.
The successful association that started at the Indianapolis 500 last May will therefore continue on. Wheldon had taken a surprise victory at the 100th Indy 500 a month ago while driving for Bryan Herta's outfit.
Tony Cotman, project manager for this new car, believes that the developing program is in the best of hands with Wheldon and Herta.
"I've always had an interest in the technical side of the sport and the process of constantly improving the car so I'm looking forward to this opportunity to have our team test the new chassis," said Herta.
Wheldon added: "This is something that we are going to take very seriously and approach in a very professional manner.
"It is very important for the growth of the series that the testing is done in a way that will create an even better product at the start of 2012."
At the present time, no specific circuits have been chosen to host the testing program but it is believed that the Dallara chassis will go through the various types of tracks the series visits.
The comprehensive chassis testing period will take place in August and September. Teams are meant to receive their first new chassis by December 15 and a second one by January 15.
Manufacturers (Honda, Chevrolet and Lotus) will have the opportunity to purchase a new chassis on August 15 for their own testing programs, which are scheduled to begin on October 1st.
