Team Penske’s Will Power beat Sam Schmidt Motorsports’s Alex Tagliani to the fastest time set yet in practice for the Indianapolis 500 as activities returned to normal after days of rain.
Alex Tagliani look set to have the fastest speed of the day but Power was able to charge back in the closing moments of the session and put in a fast lap at 227.778 mph.
Power's teammates Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves were third and fourth, ahead of Tagliani's teammate, Townsend Bell.
The session was interrupted early on by a frightening crash for Simona de Silvestro, whose HVM Dalla-Honda crashed heavily at Turn 3, landing upside down and catching fire.
De Silvestro was taken to hospital for treatment to minor burns on her hands.
The field has one more six-hour practice session Friday afternoon before qualifying for all 33 grid places takes place across the weekend.
