While the Australian was the quickest overall in practice, Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon was second and Ryan Briscoe ended up in third.
Current series champion Dario Franchitti (Ganassi) was fourth and the driver who was blamed for the mess-up in the first corner at St Petersburg, Helio Castroneves, was fifth.
Newman/Haas Racing’s James Hinchcliffe, who's making his IZOD IndyCar Series debut this weekend, was in the top-10 as well as his team-mate Oriol Servia.
The top-12 cars were separated by a second, and six teams were represented in the top-10.
The other Canadian Alex Tagliani (Sam Schmidt Motorsports) was only able to clock the 14th fastest time.
Everybody will be busy on Saturday, starting with a 20-minute session preceding the three rounds of qualifications to set the 26-car grid for Sunday main event.
