Penske's Ryan Briscoe was the quickest driver of the day as he earned pole position for the first oval race of the 2010 IZOD IndyCar season on the Kansas Speedway after a much delayed practice session.

Scott Dixon had been the fastest in the preceeding practice session, but when it mattered the Australian had the best over the Ganassi driver by over 0.4 seconds.

Dan Wheldon (Panther Racing) was third altough his position remains under scrutiny with race control pondering whether to penalise the former champion for crossing the white line at the bottom of the track during his qualifying run.

Dario Franchitti put the second Ganassi car fourth, with highly impressive performances from Alex Tagliani (Fazzt), Hideki Mutoh (Newman/Haas/Lanigan) and Vitor Meira
(Foyt).

Championship leader Will Power was only eighth, ahead of his Penske team-mate Helio Castroneves.
