IRL: Will Honda remain the sole supplier of IndyCar engines?

Honda has recently announced that it would supply its new turbocharged engine to the IZOD IndyCar series starting in 2012 but believes it’s already too late for new engine manufacturers to join in.

Honda Performance Development (HPD), located in Santa Clarita, California revealed that its new V6, 2.4 litre, turbocharged engine could be leased for a price tag that would be at least 40% off the current rate.

Still, no other manufacturers have yet to come forward to express an interest in joining the series and a HPD representative feels that it's already too late to start a programme from scratch for the 2012 season.

"We are operating on the assumption there won't be any competition in 2012 -- we have to be prepared to be the sole supplier. If sole supply changes to competition at some point, then we have made some investment for that as well."

IndyCar boss Randy Bernard claimed at last week's Mid Ohio round that an American engine supplier was "very, very interested" in joining the series. Time is running out…
