No, it’s not a joke. After several postponements, Fisker spokesperson Roger Ormisher has announced that production of the Karma was finally launched today at Valmet Automotive’s Finnish plant.

Deliveries to the first American and European clients should start next month. For 2011, a little over 7,000 units will be produced. “We’re going to be ramping up very slowly, very carefully to ensure quality”, said Ormisher.

The Karma, the first luxury plug-in hybrid on the market, has a range of around 80 km in electric mode. Once the energy of the electric mill, powered by a lithium-ion battery, is completely spent, a 201-hp, 2.0-litre, turbocharged ECOTEC motor/generator takes over.

The car produces an estimated 981 monstrous ft-lb of torque helping it to reach top speeds of approximately 201 km/h and leap from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds. It will be available from 88,000 USD.

Aside from the Karma Fisker is getting ready to enter the stock market and is working on project NINA, a sedan using a similar technology and selling for about 39,900 USD after federal tax credits.
