S-Type's signature sideline look ''is now far better resolved,'' Callum says, ''because, most dramatically of all, the rear of the new S-Type has been made more consistent with the rest of the body line. Again, bumper side details are simpler, while the rear fender, upper and lower rear bumper surfaces and the rear lip of the trunk are all raised by a significant amount, and subtly reshaped to continue the sweeping sideline right through the profile.''

The new S-Type also features a trunk plinth that will be a design signature on all future Jaguars, Callum points out, and ''in keeping with Jaguar's new styling direction, there is a more technical look to the distinctive round tail lamps. These now blend smoothly into the new curves of the tail and have more complex shapes behind their clear lenses, giving a jewel-like appearance.''
Even the shape of the license plate recess has changed, Callum notes, ''to tone down the oval theme, reducing the number of conflicting lines and -- again -- adding new muscle tone.''
Along with unique styling cues to the different models, there is also a choice of five new alloy wheel designs, in sizes up to 18 inches.
The new S-Type also introduces what Callum calls ''a significantly improved interior that adds to the feel of contemporary luxury,'' including the use of improved materials and overall build quality.
