Every one knows John Lennonʼs Rolls-Royce Phantom V Limousine that shocked Britain with its psychedelic colours. But fewer know that Lennon also owned a 1965 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Coupe. He bought it after passing his driving test in February 1965! This celebrity car will be one of the stars of this week-end Bonhams’ auction sale presented in Paris.

With a value estimated around CDN$ 170,000 - 230,000, this opalescent silver blue Ferrari was bought just two months before the famous Phantom V. Lennon paid £2,000 (about $3,000) for it at the time. In the same period, he also purchased a Mini. According to Janne Mäkelä, author of the book John Lennon Imagined: Cultural History of a Rock Star, Lennon had the Mini ʻfor pottering about inʼ, the Rolls-Royce 'for relaxing' and the Ferrari 'for zoom'! On November 12 of the same year however, the Italian sports car was already being offered for sale with less than 5,000 kilometres!

Pininfarina’s Jacqueline for sale!
Lennon’s Ferrari is only one of several attractive collector cars to be offered at this Bonhams venue. One other is the 1961 Cadillac ‘Jacqueline’ (CDN$ 275,000 – 410,000). This unique automobile was built by the Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina in honour of America’s First Lady, Jackie Kennedy, the year that her husband, John F. Kennedy, was elected President of the United States.

The 1961 Cadillac Jacqueline designed and built by Pininfarina.

It is one of four Cadillac-based styling exercises made by Pininfarina between 1958 and 1961. During the early 1960s, it was part of the coachbuilder’s exhibits at major auto shows, including the 1961 Paris Salon. Later it was consigned to the company’s Museum where it remained for over thirty years.

In the mid 1990s, President of Cartier and noted car collector, Alain Dominique Perrin, bought the Jacqueline and sent it to the US to be made roadworthy on a 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz chassis. The car, which is now fully driveable, has only covered delivery mileage since its mechanical restorations. Most of the interior is exactly as it was when it was built by Pininfarina.

Impressive array of collector cars
Among the 100 automobiles or so to be auctioned is also a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 Sports Saloon formerly the property of His Majesty King Baudouin of Belgium (CDN$ 275,000 – 330,000), two Bugattis owned by Lord Raglan, Patron and Past Chairman of the Bugatti Owners' Club, and Trustee of the Bugatti Trust, a Type 51 1933 Grand Prix Two- Seater (CDN$ 820,000 – 1,100,000) and a Type 46 Cabriolet 1930 (CDN$ 340,000 – 410,000), and finally a Rolls-Royce Phantom V Limousine 1963 which was the property of H.R.H. Edward, Duke of Kent (CDN$ 160,000 – 200,000).

This Bonhams sale of collectors’ cars, motorcycles and automobilia will take place this Saturday 5th February at the Grand Palais on the Champs-Elysées, in Paris.
