In addition to its highly anticipated Urus SUV, Lamborghini is currently developing an electric sports car in a joint venture with two Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) laboratories. The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio is for now still only at the design stage of development, but it opens the door to an ultra-high-performance electric Lamborghini in the coming years.
The Italian automaker is focusing on five elements it believes will underpin sports cars in the future: visionary design, an advanced propulsion system, innovative materials, efficient energy storage and, of course, pure emotion at the wheel. According to Lamborghini, what’s impossible today will be realizable tomorrow.
Instead of conventional batteries, Lamborghini’s electric car will use supercapacitors and be able to both generate and recover power. The entire body of the car will in fact become an immense energy storage system. Finely tuned aerodynamics and innovative lightweight construction using mainly carbon fibre are also integral parts of the engineers’ design plans. Also in the works is a “self-healing” mechanism, whereby the car can automatically detect any damage to the frame and activate chemical reactions to repair it before it spreads. In terms of the powertrain, Lamborghini is developing an all-wheel drive system placing the electric motors in the wheels, in order to maximize torque and free up space and possibilities for the designers to create a highly aerodynamic silhouette that slices through the air better than any previous car.
Lamborghini also pointed out another particularly cool functionality of its future electric car: a track driving simulator. In essence, this virtual driver’s aid will allow you to complete a lap of a race track before you even take command of the car.
