Having showcased its green technology know-how at several auto shows, Land Rover has announced the launch of a gas hybrid version of the of 2012 Range Rover as early as 2013 as well as a range-extender variant one year later.
Global Brand Director John Edwards says the automaker will concentrate on integrating hybrid power trains into its bigger models, “where the greater fuel consumption gains are to be made”.
Positioning of the hybrid models has yet to be determined. A V6 combined with an electric engine, capable of performing like a V8, will likely be used and eventually shared with Jaguar products. Land Rover doesn’t currently intend to adopt diesel hybrids like the range_e.
According to Edwards, the latter will no doubt never be offered to the general public, its high price turning consumers off. He added that Land Rover doesn’t plan on developing a hybrid version of the new Evoque at the moment.
