Legendary automaker Aston Martin has confirmed on Monday plans to take on Peugeot and Audi in a bid for outright victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2009.
The British car manufacturer is to develop a V12-powered LMP1 prototype racer, which will be based on the 2008 Charouz Racing-run Lola that used the engine last year. The new LMP1 will feature significant aerodynamic re-profiling as well as some of the marque's styling cues.
The new Aston Martin cars, which have yet to be given an official codename, will run on gasoline (unlike the Audis and the Peugeots that are diesel) and will carry the famous Gulf livery.
The Charouz driving team of Stefan Mucke, Jan Charouz and Tomas Enge will be retained by Aston Martin Racing for the Le Mans effort and a full LMS campaign.
The trio will also be joined by Darren Turner, Harold Primat and a sixth driver to be announced shortly.
