That utensil quality is evident in the engine used by the ES 350, namely a 3.5-litre, 24-valve V-6 good for 272 hp at 6,200 rpm and 254 lb-ft of torque at 4,700 rpm, which should deliver 0-100 kmh times of about seven seconds if you really, really hit it hard. Those high-rev points means the engine will require a significant amount of revving to get it moving, and that's important since it operates on premium (91 octane) gas, which adds about 10 cents to the price of a litre, which moves it above a dollar in most Canadian cities. That's an extra $7 every time you fill the 70-litre tank.

If the 2007 ES 350 is run in a gentle manner, the gas penalty should be reduced because the front wheels are driven by a six-speed automatic electronically-controlled transmission with overdrive.

The wheels are 17-inch aluminum alloy surrounded by P215/55R17 all season radials, and a bowl full of alphabet control systems (VSC, TRAC, ABS) should help keep the car and its occupants out of trouble.

Along with the L-finesse exterior shape with "long proportions emphasized by a set-back cabin, strong frame, and all-glass roof on the top trim level," says Payne, the ES 350 has an interior that's "elegant and comfortable, with sleek instrumentation and an available 14-speaker Mark Levinson Audio system."

Overall, says Payne, the ES 350 "is the perfect luxury vehicle for young, style-conscious Canadians. Its combination of grace, elegance, performance and handling is the perfect introduction for many to a satisfying, life-long relationship between Canadian drivers and Lexus quality."

The new ES 350 is not any longer than the model it replaces, but it does have a longer (by more than 50 mm) wheelbase and a wider (by more than 25 mm) track) it is roomier inside, which usually means more comfort for its occupants.

Overall, the new ES 350 weighs about 1,624 kg with a body that's 4,854 mm long on a 2,776-mm wheelbase, 1,821 mm wide and 1,455 mm tall.
