The all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 made its first live appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show last night.

Wider, lower, and 100kg lighter than the outgoing model, this fourth generation of the popular roadster is equipped with a 2.0L SKYACTIV-G engine (power and torque remain unspecified) and a 6-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual gearbox. The height of the hood was lowered and the A-pillars and front header were moved rearward and made thinner to create a panoramic view with greater visibility.

The 2016 Mazda MX-5 was designed to provide more excitement behind the wheel. The pedals, controls, gauges and all equipment are optimally positioned to enable the driver to maintain a straight posture and drive comfortably. The front-midship-engine/rear-wheel-drive configuration realizes a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. Also, the hood, trunk lid, front fender and front and rear bumper reinforcements are all made of aluminum for reduced weight and a lower centre of gravity.

Other highlights of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 include a soft top that can be operated easily while remaining seated, headrest-integrated speakers that enhance the enjoyment of driving with the top down, the next-generation Mazda Connect car connectivity system,  and body panels that wrap around and extend right into the door trim and thereby break down the visual boundaries between the vehicle’s interior and exterior.

Mazda has yet to announce the price and on-sale date of the 2016 MX-5, although it's scheduled to hit the market sometime next year.
