Lots of roadster fans will be looking forward to the arrival of the regular Mazda Miata roadster this September, but it's only the hard-core Miata-maniacs who will care about buying one of the 3rd Generation Limited models that Canada will get.
For $34,495, 150 Canadians will be able to buy this country's share of the 3,500 units that will be built for the entire world, each of which feature unique style and packaging specific to model. There are no mechanical differences between this model and the standard Miata, however.
But each car is identified by a numbered plate on the transmission tunnel, which Mazda Canada president Mike Benchimol says will "ensure they'll be in short supply and moving fast off dealers' lots," and he's probably right. As a result of that, prospective buyers can probably expect at least some dealers to put a premium on the Limited model. Be advised, then.
He's also probably right that the unique cosmetic package and that number plate will also make it a collectable in later life, even though the pro-active nature of the enterprise might offend some purists.
As a car rather than a collectable, says Benchimol, the range-topping MX-5 3rd Generation Limited's "eye-catching color and unique features will surely turn heads and bring pure driving excitement to all who sit behind the wheel."
The exclusive color for the MX-5 3rd Generation Limited is Velocity Red Mica, which is featured on the front and rear bumpers. Meanwhile, the front bumper grille, A-pillar, outer door handle, head lamp bezel and foglamp covers all boast unique, silver trim.
The silver trim is also used in the windshield frame, says Benchimol, in order to make the car stand out better from a distance.
Inside, the MX-5 3rd Generation Limited includes a seven-speaker BOSE AM/FM/CD stereo, stainless steel scuff plates and of course that numbered badge. Silver accents to the centre panel, ventilation louvers, meter rings, shift lever and parking brake complement the interior color scheme.
Finally, model-exclusive heated red leather seats match the exterior of the car, says Benchimol, will offering "excellent support and an ideal driving position."
Like all Miata models, the limited edition model gets its power from a 2-litre inline-four that puts out 170 hp. This, Benchimol says, helps the karma of the MX-5 reach Jinba Ittai, a Japanese phrase that translates to "the rider and horse as one."
According to Benchimol, "oneness is the cornerstone of the Jinba Ittai driving experience and occurs when the boundaries between driver and vehicle melt away and create one single being. Essentially, Jinba Ittai is a celebration of the simple delights of driving a lightweight, nimble, open-air roadster, and anyone who has driven a Miata knows the feeling."
