Thanks to exclusive pictures released by Mazda, we now have a pretty good idea of what the production version of the new CX-5 crossover will look like when it makes its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show less than two weeks from now.

The future rival of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4, Chevrolet Equinox, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and Mitsubishi RVR should arrive in showrooms in early 2012 and sell below the price of the CX-7.

At 178.7 inches long, the CX-5 is more than five inches shorter than its larger sibling, while sitting on a 106.3-inch wheelbase that is two inches shorter.

The vehicle will incorporate Mazda's new Skyactiv technologies, including a 2.0-litre engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, for impressive gas-saving benefits.

Of course, there will likely be some differences between the European and North American models. Final specifications will be made public at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

A group of European journalists who tested a pre-production model this week also revealed that a 2.2-litre, twin-turbocharged diesel engine producing more than 160 horsepower and about 310 lb-ft of torque will be added to the CX-5 lineup for the 2014 model year.
