Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda) have just announced that Mazda’s nearly completed Salamanca city, Guanajuato state, Mexico plant will jointly build subcompact cars for both manufacturers.

The plant, scheduled to begin building cars as of summer 2015, will assemble the Mazda2 and a Toyota subcompact car sharing a large number of components. The highly popular Mazda3 will also be produced here. Total annual production capacity is said to be of 140,000 units.

Toyota is therefore contributing to the production equipment and development costs. This then enables Toyota to further infuse the North American market with more small cars. As well, Mazda wins by increasing production efficiency and profitability.
