After seducing auto critics and performance nuts the world over with the MP4-12C, McLaren is at it again with a wider range of sports cars featuring the same innovative technology. That’s what the automaker’s CEO Antony Sheriff revealed at the NY auto show.
Though the British manufacturer benefits from exemptions and doesn’t have to comply with strict European and US laws, it will nevertheless pay special attention to the fuel efficiency of its products.
What’s more, McLaren will continue developing lightweight materials (like carbon fibre) and other technologies that will allow batteries to power future vehicles. That’s right. We can expect to see a hybrid or electric McLaren at some point.
The manufacturer’s role in F1 racing will obviously be beneficial, but the development budget isn’t something that can be skimped on. According to Sheriff, McLaren will have to invest 1 billion dollars and support itself in the not-so-distant future.
So, can we expect the unveiling of a hybrid or an electric model? Who’se to say? When the team here at Auto123.com starting discussing the possibilities, half of us predicted a Tesla on steroids while the other half was betting on a hybrid machine in the vein of the Porsche GT3 R.
We all agreed on one thing though, a point mentioned by Anthony Sheriff when describing the MP4-12C: the car will literally be capable of peeling the skin off your face.
