New Mercedes-AMG GT R ready to tear the track apart

Automotive columnist: , Updated:

The new Mercedes-AMG GT R is making its global debut as a formidable answer to the equally formidable Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Developed and perfected at the famous Nürburgring, this super sports coupe definitely won’t go unnoticed with its Green Hell body paint, long hood, and prominent side air intakes.

A twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 basically makes the Mercedes-AMG GT R a rolling rocket. While about 30lb lighter than the GT S thanks to the use of more carbon fibre, it also increases output from 503 to 577 horsepower (the standard GT generates “only” 456 horsepower). This results in an estimated 0-60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 198 mph (318 km/h).

The Mercedes-AMG GT R is expected to arrive at U.S. dealers in mid-2017. Details for the Canadian market have yet to be announced.
