With up to 76,000 filling stations being converted to new, cleaner diesel fuel, Mercedes Benz is commencing sales of the E320 Bluetec in the USA and Canada in one weeks time.

The new clean diesel fuel, which contains sulphur content at or below 15 parts per million, enables the use of the German carmakers new Bluetec technology. Until the Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) was available, the "dirty" diesel fuel available in North America had too many impurities and could have potentially damaged the emissions control systems.

The Bluetec technology and ULSD allow the E320 Bluetec the distinguished title of being the world's cleanest diesel car.

It's the first and only vehicle worldwide to have exceeded the stringent American BIN 8 exhaust regulations standard, which is exceedingly tough in regard to nitrogen oxide emissions. Part of the reason Bluetec is so clean

has to do with an additive called AdBlue, a liquid which is injected into the exhaust stream to help control emissions. The liquid is carried on board in a tank which is refilled at scheduled maintenance intervals.

With diesel vehicles predicted to be in high demand, Mercedes has plans to systematically expand its lineup of Bluetec products to include availability in R, ML and GL class by 2008.

On sale next week in the USA and Canada, Mercedes claims its green diesel uses up to 30 percent less fuel than a comparable gas-powered vehicle.
