Mercedes unveils new 2013 GL-Class

Mercedes debuted its all-new 2013 GL-Class to press at the New York Auto Show this week, complete with 179,000 word of press material. Here’s the condensed version:

Nifty safety features for the marque’s luxury full-size SUV will include standard Collision Prevention Assist, Crosswind Stabilization, self-levelling air suspension and electromechanical steering. New too are Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, and PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist. Now, that’s a lot of assistance.

It offers space for up to seven, distinctive exterior chrome detailing including a strip along the beltline and edging around the windows, and several wheel choices depending on trim: GL350 BlueTEC and GL450 get 19” twin five-spoke alloys; GL550 gets 21” AMG twin five-spoke wheels. Optional on GL350 BlueTEC and GL450 are 20” 10-spoke alloys.

Illuminated brushed aluminum running boards are standard on GL550 and available on GL350 BlueTEC and GL450.

Three engines are available, all turbocharged: 6 cylinders on GL350 BlueTEC offers 240 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque (up 30 horses and 55 lb-ft over the outgoing model); 8 cylinders on GL450 offer 362/406 repsectively; and on the GL550, an 8-cylinder produces 429 hp and 516 lb-ft.
