In order to keep up with the proverbial 'Joneses', the Sportback is expected to come with the all of the latest goodies, including a super-rigid structure, fully-independent rear suspension, electrically-assisted power steering and a full line of gasoline and diesel engines. All-wheel drive may appear as an option, given the fact that Mitsubishi knows the technology like the back of its figurative hand.

The replacement for the Lancer will, like the Caliber, be built as a global vehicle helping the brand to minimize expenses, while reaching out to all of Mitsubishi's markets. This explains why the Concept-Sportback is

While it's been widely rumoured that the Lancer will be available in a sedan-only body style, with the possibility of a wagon, with Chrysler's variant providing a hatchback backup, insiders are now suggesting that Mitsubishi is pursuing a full range for its upcoming small car. Depending on available funding, it is likely that a three-door hatchback, a station wagon, a folding hardtop convertible, and a mini-MPV will most likely be added to the lineup, which would allow the brand to rival other major car manufacturers with similar C-segment lineups. To breakaway from the Lancer's somewhat ho-hum four-door image, the name may also be dropped for something new.
