Where is Formula 1 Going?
Formula 1, as we all know, is always changing, always developing, and always making news. For the past year or so, the
squabbling between the manufacturers, the FIA, Bernie Ecclestone and the teams has left all of us wondering if in fact there will be a Formula 1 - as we currently know it - in the near future.
This past week, the FIA announced the 'direction' it wants Formula 1 to go in 2008 and beyond. The FIA continues to push for drastic cost cuts and changing the cars so that passing becomes easier.
Following that vein, the FIA said the rules - which
should be out in detailed form during the week of December 19 - would consist of a 'standard Electronic Control Unit', 'long life engines - with rev limiters - and gearboxes' and a single tire supplier (read; Bridgestone). One of the more curious decisions is the restrictions on the ability of teams to change their aerodynamics during the season.
In reality, the FIA has little chance of getting most of these regulations to come into force anytime soon. The manufacturers will not sit idly by why they get kneecapped on development. Also, the decision on the aerodynamics is not going to go over very well. Just about every F1 team out there has spent millions of euros on the latest, greatest wind tunnels, that now would sit idle... that' ain't happening.
