Dakar outing in 2005 at the wheel of his Mitsubishi. Although, bad luck continued to hound early leader Stephane Peterhansel, all Alphand had to do was hang on, which he did. A thumped tree spelled the end for Peterhansel, and Alphand was able to cruise home. Volkswagen put on a decent charge with its massive effort, and they were rewarded with a strong second place.

American Robbie Gordon was expected to challenge for victory in his Hummer, but that didn't come to pass. Instead American Mark Miller was strong and consistent all rally, and came home with a well deserved fifth place.
