It took him forty seven races but veteran Jeff Gordon (Chevy No 24) finally won a NASCAR Sprint Cup race and not anyone but the Samsung 500 run at the Texas Motor Speedway, a track where Gordon had never won either!
But Gordon was lucky. If it had not been a late yellow flag situation, it could have been a Carl Edwards (Ford No 99) victory. But Edwards' team screwed up and, as he came in the pits as the leader, he left with less than 25 laps to go in 11th place.
Jeff came out first and fled away but he still had to look behind him as his teammate Jimmie Johnson (Chevy No 48) was closing in.
Finally, Gordon crossed the finish line first followed by Johnson, Greg Biffle (Ford No 16), Tony Stewart (Chevy No 14), Matt Kenseth (Ford No 17) and Mark Martin (Chevy No 5). Edwards finished tenth. There were only six yellow flag situations for the 334-lap race.
Gordon still leads the championship after seven races now followed by Johnson and Kurt Busch. The next Sprint Cup race will occur in Phoenix on Saturday April 18.
