Brad Keselowski, who suffered a 100mph impact with a non-SAFER barrier at Road Atlanta on Wednesday, will miss the NASCAR Nationwide race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday.
Even though Keselowski was cleared to drive, on Thursday by Charlotte, NC-based neurosurgeon, Jerry Petty, team officials said that Sam Hornish, Jr. will drive in Saturday’s race instead.
Penske Racing, in a statement said “due to Brad Keselowski's accident while testing at Road Atlanta yesterday, he will not participate in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race this weekend at Iowa Speedway. Parker Kligerman will practice the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Challenger on Friday, while Sam Hornish Jr. will qualify and race the car on Saturday. Penske Racing will continue to evaluate Brad's condition. Further information will be provided as it becomes known.”
Keselowski had been helicoptered to a Georgia hospital for evaluation, after his crash, but was released after x-rays were negative for injury. The driver tweeted photographs of a swollen left ankle and severely bruised right ankle. Jimmie Johnson tweeted a photo of Keselowski’s severely damaged No. 2 Dodge.
Since he races in both the top-level Sprint Cup series and Nationwide Keselowski would have been flying between the Cup race at Pocono International Raceway and Iowa Speedway. This move allows him greater rest for the Cup race.
