American driver Sam Hornish will have to qualify on speed for his next NASCAR Sprint Cup outing at Charlotte next weekend after his No. 77 Team Penske car dropped out of the top 35 in the owner standings.
Hornish had been guaranteed a place on the grid from the start of the season after taking over Kurt Busch's Penske entry.
The former IndyCar champion and Indy 500 winner hasn't had to rely on his provisional spot to gain entry to a race, having qualified well throughout the season so far.
But he dropped to 36th place in the owner standings following his retirement from the last race at Darlington and will have to qualify on speed at Charlotte.
A good result at Charlotte will more than likely promote him back into the top 35 as he lies just 18 points behind Dave Blaney in 35th place.
