Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) said that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler will offer an 8-speed automatic transmission that will improve fuel economy by 9% from the existing 5-speed unit.
"The 8-speed transmission is currently paired with gasoline and diesel engines in the 2014 Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee and is also featured in the new 2014 Dodge Durango. We plan to use this transmission in all of our rear-wheel-drive vehicles, except for heavy-duty versions of the Ram pick-up truck and the SRT Viper," the company wrote in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Automotive News reports.
The 8-speed transmission doesn't fit in the current model.
The new 2018 Jeep Wrangler is also expected to get a lightweight aluminum body and a different engine than the 3.6L V6 to further save fuel.
