The completely redesigned, fourth-generation Audi A4 serves as further evidence that you shouldn't judge a book solely by its cover. While the car's exterior features a number of subtle design updates for a sleek yet understated appearance, the amount of new technologies and amenities inside the A4 is impressive.
Likely to be released on this side of the Atlantic as a 2017 model, the new Audi A4 comes standard with 17” alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, Audi smartphone interface with Bluetooth connectivity, Audi Drive Select, three-zone climate control, and a 7” colour MMI monitor.
The optional Audi virtual cockpit, a fully digital combination instrument panel, features a 12.3” LCD screen that displays the most important information in brilliant high-resolution graphics. Meanwhile, the top-end infotainment system, called MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch, includes a large 8.3” monitor along with a touchpad in the rotary controller to zoom in and out and to enter characters.
Physically, the new Audi A4 is up to 120kg lighter (depending on engine selection) when compared with the outgoing model. This results in up to 21% lower fuel consumption. Furthermore, the A4's drag coefficient was reduced to just 0.23 in the case of the sedan and 0.26 in the case of the A4 Avant wagon. In terms of CO2 emissions, the available 2.0L TDI model drops below the 100g/km mark.
Speaking of which, the new Audi A4 will offer a total of seven different engines worldwide including three gasoline-powered TFSI units and four TDI variants. Output ranges from 148-268 horsepower. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual, a 7-speed dual-clutch S tronic, and an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic. No word yet on which powertrain options will be offered in North America when the redesigned A4 goes on sale.
Audi tried to incorporate as many advanced safety systems as possible, too. The new Audi A4 can detect and read road signs, help drivers during parking manoeuvres, and adjust cruising speed automatically even in traffic jams. It also features active lane assist, rear cross-traffic assist, exit warning, collision avoidance assist, turn assist, and the Audi pre-sense systems.
