If a collision deploys any airbag, the system automatically establishes contact with the Mercedes-Benz Response Centre, relaying all pertinent information. If voice contact is not established (the driver may be unable to respond following the crash), local police, fire or emergency services can also be dispatched.

The onboard transmitter is crash-secure, Mercedes points out, and has access to redundant antennae.

For non-emergency use, Tele Aid has two buttons inside the center armrest. One button marked with the symbol of a wrench puts the customer in contact with Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance. Another button marked with the letter "i" connects the customer with a Customer Service Representative, who can answer questions about the car.

A fourth benefit of Tele Aid is vehicle theft tracking, which can actually help authorities locate the car once the owner reports it stolen.

The E320 sedans and wagons are powered by an 18-valve, 3.2-litre V6 that delivers 221 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque. A dual-path intake manifold helps this engine produce 85 percent of its peak torque at 2000 rpm and sustain its maximum torque level from 3000-4600 rpm for improved midrange response.

The 4.3-litre V8 powering the E430 delivers 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, a level it sustains from 3000 to 4400 rpm.
