The Mercedes-Benz SmartKey remote locking/anti-theft system has no metal ignition key that could be illegally copied. Instead, the driver inserts the pointed tip of the key fob into the ignition slot and turns it. The infrared data exchange between the car and the remote unit electronically unlocks the steering column and engages the starter motor. The code needed to unlock and start the car is changed each time the car is used.
All 2000 Mercedes-Benz models come with the New Passenger Car Limited Warranty which covers defects in materials or workmanship for four years or 80,000 km, whichever comes first. Major components such as engine, transmission, drivetrain, fuel and cooling systems, suspension, steering and brakes are covered for five years or 120,000 km.
In addition, brake pads, brake discs, windshield wiper blade inserts and light bulbs - items normally considered "wear and tear" and therefore the responsibility of the owner -- are covered for two years or 40,000 km.
