Rack and pinion hydraulic-assist steering is said to add to the Aveo's driving pleasure, while the relatively wide track ''provides enhanced handling and makes the sedan very surefooted.''

Clarke says Aveo offers strong occupant protection in the event of an accident, thanks to the ''stable passenger cell, which is made predominantly of high-strength steel. The B-pillar moves like a pendulum rather than being folded and protruding into the passenger compartment,'' he explains. ''Known as Tailor-Welded Blanking, or the pendulum method, this is normally used only in larger, upper-segment vehicles.''

For China, the Aveo will come with a choice of a 1.4-liter or 1.6-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, matched to a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission.

What powertrains come with the car when it gets to Canada remain to be seen, but it probably won't include the smaller engine.
