The opening round of the brand new GT1 world championship will begin this weekend at the Yas Marina circuit of Abu Dhabi.
The 2010 championship features six iconic brands, 12 independent teams and 48 of the world’s best GT drivers.
As Stephane Ratel, the promoter of the FIA GT1 World Championship, said at the series launch in Paris last month, “we are now ready to showcase the pinnacle of sports car racing in a single world championship and become one of the ‘big four’ international motorsport series recognised by the FIA.”
In order to keep costs under control, the cars have been developed by the brands, but they are raced by private teams. Each brand will be represented by two teams with each team running two cars.
The field will be composed by four Aston Martin DBR9s (teams Hexis AMR and AMR Young Driver), four Corvette Z06s (Mad Croc and Phoenix Carsport), four Ford GTs (Matech and Marc VDS), four Lamborghini Murcielago R-SVs (Reiter Engineering and All Inkl Munich), four Maserati MC12s (Vitaphone Racing and Tripe H), and finally four Nissan GT-Rs (Swiss Racing Team and Sumo Power GT).
