There's a striking new IROC concept on the table, but put away your tight jeans and mullet wax, because this time it's not a Camaro.

Volkswagen is proudly showing off its IROC concept car, which is designed to recall the Sirocco from some 3 decades ago. Through its affordable

performance, unique hardware and looks, and distinctively Volkswagen approach to the driving experience, the underlying common tie between the Sirocco and the Iroc is much the same, despite the generation gap.

A very sleek but very usable sports car, the Iroc concept features room for 4 adults and ample trunk space for their belongings beneath its long roof. Classic performance car proportions have been applied to the new concept with attention to elegance, communication of power and poise, and an emphasis on creating a distinctive performance face for the Volkswagen brand. It's far more Euro-looking than any VW product currently on our shores, though its angry visage looks as though it could scare small children. In the back, horizontally arranged tail lamps extend far into the fenders, and appear as a natural continuation of the Iroc's body.

The concept Iroc's paint treatment is called Viper Green Metallic, and is the exact shade of green applied to the first Sirocco's back in the 1970's. The

Viper green color is of gorgeous contrast to the shades of dark carbon scattered over the body of the machine. Wrap the package up with special 19 inch wheels and tires and a glass roof, and t he resulting machine is retro-colored with a look to the future.

Part of that forward thinking isn't visible from the outside of the car. Under the hood is an engine referred to as TSI, or simply "twin-charger" by Volkswagen staff. The engine represents the most efficient gasoline engine on the road today, Volkswagen says. It consists of a small engine with both a supercharger and a turbocharger- two forms of forced induction that, when used together, cancel out each others weaknesses. The engine powering the concept achieves 210 horsepower which is delivered via a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). A number of possible combinations of engines and superchargers are possible, though Volkswagen says that all would lead to driving fun.

Only time will tell if VW will create this highly unique model for consumers, though it's almost certain to be a hit yet again if that were the case.
