controversial 9-7x has been creating a fuss because of its common GMT360 body-on-frame architecture and live rear axle. It sure looks like a Saab from the front, but a quick glance at the TrailBlazer/Envoy style mirrors and familiar C- and D-pillars make its domestic roots very apparent. The interior features decent quality materials on most surfaces, but GM's standard SUV steering wheel looks out of place. Also nontraditional is the truck's optional 5.3L OHV V8 - the standard multi-valve, DOHC inline-6 is more true to character. Still, it's hard to argue with V8 power, DVD entertainment system upgrade and premium Saab badge for only $53,400.

VUE gets a mid-cycle upgrade for 2006, showing a modified grille in base trim and upgrades to the interior. The top-line Red Line model might be a better indication of what the next-generation VUE might look like, sporting an Opel-esque horizontal chrome bar across the grille a la 2007 SKY roadster and AURA concept. One of the last Saturns to sport dent resistant polymer body panels over a steel space frame, until the model gets replaced, it gets a 143-hp 2.2L I-4 mated to a 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed auto in base trim, or an optional Honda-built 250-hp 3.5L V6 and a 5-speed automatic.

2006 Subaru Forester - Upgraded Styling and More Power

Forester gets mild revisions for 2006, including a new grille insert, updated taillights, modifications to the dash and new seat materials. Under the skin, a revised 2.5L H-4 engine ups output from 165-hp to 173 in base trim, while the top-tier XT gets a new turbocharged 2.5L four sporting 230-hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. The new powerplant should transform sprints to highway speed from standstill and bolster highway passing power, especially when the optional 4-speed automatic is fitted - a 5-speed manual comes standard. Additional enhancements and refinements make for a much more competitive crossover entry.
