As a prelude to the New York Auto Show, we learned that Suzuki was poised to unveil two variants of the Kizashi, including a turbocharged one. Last night, the small Japanese manufacturer broke the suspense and revealed the Apex (turbo) and EcoCharge (hybrid) concepts.

The Apex uses the same 2.4-litre, four-cylinder mill as the sedan but adds a Garrett turbocharger, an intercooler and a boost control system as well as a recalibrated ECU. The kit increases output to approximately 275-300 hp.

Physically the Apex is essentially the same, but sports xenon headlamps and LED fog lights as well as new 19-inch wheels wrapped in Yokohama S.Drive 245/35-R19 tires.

The EcoCharge is designed to show off the automaker’s green side. It’s motivated by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine working hand in hand with a 15-kW electric motor powered by a 115-V lithium-ion battery. As a result, it consumes 25% less fuel than the currently available version.

Suzuki also threw in regenerative braking, light wheels and low rolling resistance tires as well. Even the materials used for the seats highlight the automakers environmental responsibility: their manufacturing requires 84% less energy and produces 80% less harmful emissions.

No word yet about Suzuki’s plans to sell these vehicles in the future.
