PistonHeads posted a video filmed by bridgetogantry.com that shows the filming of Niki Lauda's frightening crash that happened during the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring circuit back in 1976.

The filming was done for the "Rush' movie of Ron Howard that is about the confrontation between Lauda and James Hunt during the 1976 Formula 1 World Championship.

Lauda's accident and subsequent rescue must rank as one of the most dramatic moments in the movie. The crew shot that scene this week, on location with a mixture of real cars and burnable models.

The guy who filmed the scene in woods wrote "Out walking the dog and I happen across one of the most amazing scenes in Ron Howard's new movie; "Rush". Of course, I had my trusty pocket cam..."

Lauda' Ferrari car suffered a mechanical failure on lap two of the race. He ploughed into the guardrail, then bounced back into the path of Brett Lunger's Surtees-Ford. Unlike Lunger he was trapped in the burning wreckage, and had lost his helmet.

Lunger, Guy Edwards, Harald Ertl and Arturo Merzario fought to pull the injured Lauda from the flames. Despite slipping into a coma and suffering permanently disfiguring burns, Lauda was back in action just six weeks later at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
