Electric vehicles are steadily gaining in popularity around the world, and Renault-Nissan Alliance has taken the lead in global sales. Since making the acquisition of Mitsubishi, the Alliance has become the world’s top manufacturer of EVs, with sales of 424,797 electrically powered vehicles as of December 31, 2016. Of that total, 94,265 were sold during 2016 alone.

Unsurprisingly, the top-selling EV in the world is the Nissan LEAF, which has sold over 250,000 units since it was first introduced in 2010. The Renault ZOE, for its part, has been enormously popular in the European market, and it’s a shame it has not been introduced on this side of the Atlantic!

Renault-Nissan Alliance has momentum on its side, increasing sales by 13.3% from 2015 to 2016, all categories included. The company racked up 9.96 million units in sales in 2016, bringing it close to the 10.1 million vehicles sold by Toyota and by General Motors, and even within reach of world number-one Volkswagen, which totaled 10.3 million units sold.

Will Renault-Nissan manage to make it into the top 3 in 2017, propelled by the growing electric-vehicle market? We’ll have to wait and see…
