It's just a quick text message right? After all, most ppl know their phones well enough to efficiently text message their friends and colleagues without taking their eyes off the road for more than a split second at a time. But driving isn't something that can be done safely when ur surroundings are being processed on anything but an undistracted basis, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

Christopher Murphy, the GHSA chairman is a father of two who realizes the urgent need to coach teenagers not to use their wireless communication devices while behind the wheel.

"All drivers, but particularly teens, need to focus solely on driving -- and that means the cell phone needs to be off. My kids know that if they want driving privileges, they better practice safe habits 100 percent of the time. This includes buckling up, following the speed limit and minimizing electronic distractions such as MP3 players. And absolutely no text messaging while driving."

Teenage drivers lack the skill and experience of older drivers, making them a highly accident prone group. This tendency only becomes worse when text messaging on a mobile phone is added to the equation.

Recent tragic accidents across North America have been a reminder of the problem, and the GHSA hopes to inform parents as to the importance of their responsibilities to educate young drivers who are often inseparable from their phones.

Currently in the US, sixteen states have laws prohibiting cell phone use amongst novice drivers- even if they save typing time by using silly abbreviations like LOL, ROFL, LMAO, L8R or 2DAY.
