Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoë is not making a lot of friends these days. His recently announced anti-pollution plan is far from receiving unanimous approval both among city councillors and the population.

The plan calls for vehicles age 17 or older (18 in the case of heavy trucks and 10 for two-wheelers) to be banned from the streets starting in 2014. To facilitate the transition, Delanoë suggested that any owner who agrees to get rid of their old beater will receive a one-year subscription to Autolib', the city's carsharing service.

Other measures aimed at cleaning the air around Paris include reduced speed limits on the outskirts (from 80 to 70 km/h starting next year), expanded 30km/h areas, and additional EV charging spots.

A toll system on metropolitan highways is also being considered, although many angry officials think that it will negatively affect drivers, suburbanites and the city as a whole.
