This campaign banks on real-world benefits that are directly felt through people’s wallets. When participants fill out their protocols, all their commitments display the related fuel savings and emission cuts. According to the instigators, committing to all nine habits will help drivers save up to 20 percent fuel.

"What’s important is that more and more people change their driving habits," adds Mr. Mayrand. "There’s a definite snowball effect to it; if you change the way you drive, chances are a lot of people around you will try to do the same."

In order to have as many people as possible on board, the campaign will culminate on May 31 with a random draw. Some lucky participants will receive $2,500 in cash, a new iPhone and five subscriptions to CAA-Quebec.

Planetair and the David Suzuki Foundation are hoping that 5,000 to 10,000 people will sign an eco-driving protocol. Over a single year of application, the program would contribute to removing 10,000 tons of CO2 from the road. The radio ads alone are expected to reach anywhere from 500,000 to one million Quebecers.

The website will remain active beyond May 31 up until the end of 2010. "I can’t predict what will happen this year, but if we’re successful, logic tells us there will be an encore," claims Mr. Mayrand.
