Now that the G8 sedan is about to hit Pontiac dealerships, GM is launching the G8 Sport Truck.

The G8 Sport Truck is a 2-door version of the sedan with a pickup box, triggering not-too-fond memories of the Chevrolet El Camino and the Ford Ranchero. Although this move is an audacious one, this type of vehicle is still very popular in Australia. And since the G8 is built down under, selling the G8 Sport Truck is a low-cost risk GM seems to be willing to take.

GM claims to be creating an all-new segment in the North American car market, but it seems to us more like a segment that's coming back from the dead.

However, the Sport Truck's name won't be Sport Truck. In fact, GM is asking consumers to suggest a name for their new model. We think it should be called the G8 Thingamabob, but you can also submit your own idea by visiting www.pontiac.com/namethiscar. The winning entry will be announced on April 15th.

From the B-pillars forward, the sheetmetal of the Sport Truck is shared with the G8 sedan. However, the rear of the vehicle features a pickup box with a tailgate and wraparound taillights. The box can hold over 1,200 litres of cargo and its payload capacity is 1,074 lbs (488 kg), while towing capacity is 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg). A soft tonneau cover is included.

The G8 Sport Truck gets the same powetrain as the G8 GT, which consists of a 6.0-liter V8 and 6-speed automatic, good for 361 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) acceleration is said to take 5.4 seconds.
