Cayman owners loved fuel-efficient performance and track-ready handling
History/Description: Entering the 2013 model year, the Porsche Cayman has been updated and revamped from the ground up, which means that the first-generation of the popular sports model has moved fully into used-car territory.

All models got a mid-mounted flat-6 engine and were rear-wheel drive. Look for a 2.7L or 2.9L flat-6 engine on standard models, and an available 3.4L engine. Horsepower ranged between 245 and 325, depending on the model selected. A driveline refresh for 2009 and newer models added horsepower across the range.

Manual or automatic/dual-clutch gearboxes were available, as were adjustable shock absorbers, automatic climate control, xenon lights, and a premium audio system.

Both Cayman and Cayman S models were available. The S indicates the presence of the larger-displacement engine and some supporting performance upgrades to the vehicle’s brakes, tires, and suspension. An exclusive, track-oriented Cayman R model was available towards the end of this generation, too.

Common Issues With The Used Porsche Cayman: Tires and brakes won’t be cheap to replace on a used Cayman, so be sure both are in good shape. Inspect the rims for signs of curb damage, too. If the seller is trying to pass off a worn set of tires and brake pads, negotiate for a lower price if possible.

Check the transmission, avoiding any used Porsche Cayman model with a manual gearbox that shifts roughly, grinds during upshifts or exhibits clutch slippage. If the model in question is automatic or PDK dual-clutch equipped, be sure there’s no difficulty in moving the shift lever between its settings. If there is, the Cayman you’re considering probably needs a new motor mount.

Some pre-2009 Porsche Cayman models suffered a well-documented issue with failure of the engine’s Intermediate Main Shaft (IMS) that could result in catastrophic engine failure. It’s unclear how many units were affected, though Porsche redesigned the engine range without the troublesome IMS from 2009 and on. Regardless of the year, protect yourself by having a full mechanical inspection at a Porsche dealer, buying a certified pre-owned model, and opting for any extra powertrain warranty that may be available.

Inspect the Cayman’s oil level and condition with the assistance of a Porsche mechanic, too. Models used in a track setting with high-grip racing tires may have suffered from oil starvation, which could damage the engine.

Other important checks should include monitoring for oil smoke from the tailpipes at startup, and a check beneath the vehicle for a leaky rear main seal.
