Hard on theheels of the launch of its hardtop 911 and its revised Boxster models, Porschehas revealed the cabriolet versions of the former model and its prices.

So, when the 911Carrera Cabriolet and Carrera S Cabriolet go on sale in March as 2005 models, they will retail for $115,650 and $129,900, respectively.

In the U.S., they'll retail for $79,100 and $88,900,respectively, which makes them serious bargains in Canadian money (about$95,000 and $106,000 at current exchange rates) for anyone looking to shop inthe U.S. and bring them backto Canada.

Whatever theprice you pay, Porsche Cars of North America (PCNA) is promising that they will''feature a wider range of standard equipment and offer higher levels ofperformance and safety than any previous standard open-top 911 model.''

PCNA PR man Bob Carlsonsays that, ''for open-air driving pleasure and convenience, both new 911Cabriolet models are equipped with an electronic soft top that opens or closesin just 20 seconds and can be deployed or retracted with the car moving at upto 50 km/h.''

To protect itsheated glass window, the top retracts in a Z-configuration with its outer sidefacing up, Carlson explains. ''To protect occupants from the rain, the top'snew sills above the doors guide water into a specially developed door seal ductin the A-pillar.''

By making suchfeatures as Porsche Stability Management, Porsche Communication Managementincluding the Porsche Sound Package Plus (CD radio with nine speakers), largerwheels, and a wind deflector standard equipment (they were previously options),Carlson say, ''the new 911 Carrera Cabriolet represents greater value than itspredecessor.''

Carlson alsopoints out that the 20-mm extension of the rear spoiler is unique to theCabriolet models for stability reasons. ''To minimize front and rear axle liftat high speeds resulting in greater driving safety,'' Carlson explained, ''thespeed-dependent rear spoiler extends farther than the spoiler on the new 911Coupes.  At the same time, the drag coefficient on the new Cabriolets hasbeen lowered to 0.29, making them leaders in their class for aerodynamicefficiency.''

The 911 CarreraS Cabriolet is powered by the same 3.8-liter, 355-hp, horizontally-opposed,six-cylinder engine as the new 911 Carrera S Coupe, Carlson says, which will ''propelthe car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. ''

Furthermore, foroptimum handling the Carrera S Cabriolet incorporates the same Porsche ActiveSuspension Management (PASM) system fitted on the Carrera S Coupe as standardequipment. The system is an option on the slower, less expensive CarreraCabriolet.

''PASM allowsthe driver to select between the comfort of a grand touring car and thetrack-ready precision of a genuine high performance sports car at the touch ofa button,'' Carlson says.

The 911 CarreraCabriolet is equipped with the new Carrera Coupe's 3.6-liter, 325-hp horizontally-opposed,six-cylinder engine that powers the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2seconds.

Carlson alsonotes that both models achieve the same top track speeds -- 285 kmh for theCarrera Cabriolet and 293 kmh for the Carrera S Cabriolet -- as their 911Carrera Coupe counterparts despite a greater weight of more than 85 kg.

Not that any ofthis would do you much good at the cars' top track speeds, but both CarreraCabriolets are equipped  with a bunch ofsafety equipment that could be helpful at legal speeds. That would include thePorsche Side Impact Protection (POSIP) system comprising head and thoraxairbags for both driver and front seat passenger, two full-size frontal airbagsand three-point seat belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters for thefront seats.

Rollover safety features include two ''ultra-strong''steel tubes in the A pillars and two supplemental safety bars located behindthe rear seats that automatically deploy in the event of a rollover.
