If you could sum up the new Ram ''Long-Hauler'' Concept in just one word, it would be ''titanic''. Built to suit the needs of anyone who tows multiple or heavy trailers, drives long distances or small business owners looking for a workhorse, this truck truly is one of a kind.
Designers started with a Ram 5500 Crew Cab and converted to a Mega Cab passenger compartment, added an 8-foot box and a mid-ship fuel tank. Combined with a second frame-mounted tank and a third, optional, bed-mounted auxiliary tank, total fuel capacity is 170 gallons (643.5 litres).
Under the hood is a 6.7-litre, inline six-cylinder High Output Cummins Turbo Diesel engine rated at 800 lb-ft of torque. It teams up with a 6-speed Aisin AS68RC automatic transmission with four-wheel-drive transfer case.
With an estimated curb weight of 9,300 pounds (4,218 kg), the Ram Long-Hauler is the very definition of a mastodon on wheels, yet it features a Kerlderman air suspension and 19.5-inch Alcoa wheels for civilized on-road driving dynamics. In fact, Chrysler says ride quality is more in line with that of a 3/4-ton truck.
In terms of size, this concept rides on a monstrous 197.4-inch (5,013 mm) wheelbase. It also stands 24 feet (7,315 mm) long and 79.1 inches (2,009 mm) tall.
Inside, ruggedness gives way to refinement. Rear passengers benefit from power-adjustable footrests and a rear centre console that includes a refrigerator, cup holders and tray tables. Also included are multiple storage areas, leather seats, wireless Internet access, a back-up camera and a DVD player for optimum comfort and convenience.
The Ram Long-Hauler Concept will be seen across the country in the next eight months to help gauge public opinion.
