A technical issue with the regen braking system can lead to a sudden loss of vehicle power while driving.

Toyota has announced a safety recall impacting some 10,000 2026 C-HR EVs across North America. The campaign addresses technical faults that can result in a sudden loss of vehicle power while driving, creating potential safety hazards on the road.

Obviously, this kind of power loss poses a risk in traffic, for the occupants of the C-HR as well as for those in other vehicles nearby.

The recall targets around 1,310 vehicles in Canada. Note that it affects 2026 model-year C-HRs; new 2027 editions of the EV are not impacted.

The problem
In the all-electric C-HR, a recent addition to Toyota’s North American electric SUV lineup alongside the bZ and bZ Woodland, the problem stems from a software glitch within the regenerative braking system. When the high-voltage battery operates at or near full charge, the regenerative braking system can inadvertently overcharge the battery pack. This overcharging triggers a protective shutdown of the electric drive system, cutting power to the wheels while the vehicle is in motion.

The solution
Though software-related, the bug can’t be fixed over the air. Toyota technicians will perform a software update on the battery Electronic Control Unit (ECU) free of charge at authorized dealerships.

Toyota says it will begin sending notices to owners of affected vehicles by early November 2026. Drivers seeking further details regarding vehicle eligibility and service scheduling are advised to contact their local dealership or consult regional transport safety databases.
