De Tomaso, which manufactured the Pantera supercar from 1971 to 1991, will return to the world automotive stage and present a new concept called SLC at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show (March 3-13, 2011).
SLC (sport luxury car) is aimed at the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo. Production is expected to start in Italy one year from now, with 3,000 handcrafted units rolling out of the factory every year. The official name of the production car has yet to be determined.
Power for the aluminum-built SLC will come from the choice of either a 300-hp V6, a 550-hp V8 or a 250-hp V6 diesel.
Credit for De Tomaso's revival goes to former Fiat executive Gian Mario Rossignolo who, along with a group of backers, purchased the company from an Italian bankruptcy court in 2009 and has since invested a total of $160 million. De Tomaso filed for bankruptcy in 2004.
A series of new models will follow the SLC, including a mechanically identical coupe that is planned for introduction by the middle of the decade.
