ICx founder Walker Butler explains where the RADS system is today.

“Our system is currently transitioning from the test and validation phase to the commercial phase of development. It’s been evaluated by several academic organizations-- including the Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University.

They have evaluated our system for many years, using demonstration projects such as a 12 mile stretch or the Indiana Turnpike in Northern Indiana, a one mile installation in Yellowstone Park, some test stations in Montana, and most recently, a one mile stretch in Northern California.

All of these have been considered successful, and therefore we are moving ahead with the commercialization of the system. In fact, the Institute predicted that where this system is installed, it would eliminate 82% of the animal-vehicle accidents. They also showed that there was a great cost-benefit ratio-- and that in many cases only 2-3 accidents per year on a stretch of road would have paid for the installation of the system”.

Looking forward, RADS technology could one day be used to transmit warnings directly to a vehicle itself. Though the required Digital Short Range Communications (DSRC) technology isn’t available in the mainstream just yet, it is in the works with most of the world’s carmakers.

Effectively, vehicles fitted with DSRC technology could pick up warnings from nearby RADS sensors and display a corresponding alert in the instrument cluster or navigation screen. Theoretically, it could even light up a ‘moose’ or ‘bear’ light on the vehicle’s dashboard.

The same DSRC technology may, some day, receive data from intersections, train crossings, emergency response vehicles and even other cars and trucks. Used with the RADS system, it stands to become a new and futuristic solution to a very old and common problem.
