In the not-so-distant past, Hyundai and Kia were considered by many as small potatoes. But with the arrival of Peter Schreyer and the complete overhaul of most of their products, the brands are now a force to be reckoned with. In fact, TrueCar.com is predicting in its most recent forecast that Honda and Toyota will be supplanted by the Korean duo in the U.S. in May.

Their analysis shows that we can expect Hyundai-Kia’s American sales to reach 15,434 units, a 43.4% increase over last year. That would be enough for them to corner 10.9% of the market, behind Ford and General Motors.

Conversely, Honda and Acura should post sales of 92,889 units and Toyota-Lexus-Scion 109,416 units. If this turns out to be the case, their sales will have plunged 20.7% and 32.8% compared to 2010.

Jesse Toprak of TrueCar.com says the defeat of the Japanese giants would be directly linked to the natural disaster that struck Japan. The shortages (both real and perceived by consumers) as well as the lack of incentives are two key factors of the drop in sales.

One man’s meat is another man’s poison, indeed.
