As the vehicle line executive for GM's small cars, Lori Queen had the responsibility of creating a car that goes as well as it shows, and she thinks she's done that. ''The Sky's performance matches its impressive styling,'' says Queen. ''Powertrain, suspension and handling components were carefully selected to provide quick and agile performance.''
Sky is equipped with a 2.4-litre, inline-four Ecotec engine with variable valve timing that produces 170 hp at 6,400 rpm and 162 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm, though both of those are estimates at the moment.
Power will go to the rear wheels through a five-speed Aisin manual transmission with a short throw shifter, or the optional five-speed automatic.
Sky will be 4091-mm long on a 2415-mm wheelbase, and 1274-mm high and 1813-mm wide, carrying a curbweight of about 1,300 kg (it's still an estimate).
Queen says Sky's other technical highlights include:
- four-wheel independent short/long arm suspension for optimal handling and stability
- coil-over Bilstein monotube shocks for excellent wheel control and road isolation
- hydraulically assisted rack- and-pinion power steering for quick, responsive vehicle control
- four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes for excellent stopping performance
- wide track width for excellent stability and superior handling
- near 50/50 weight distribution for balanced handling feel
- structural tunnel design and hydroformed longitudinal rails for a stiff body that results in greater vehicle responsiveness and better overall feel, and
- hydraulic engine mounts for a smoother engine feel

As for the more traditional-looking Saturn, the Aura concept sedan, well it is said to have a ''European-influenced exterior and a fun-to-drive character,'' and is further meant to provides a ''clear preview of how the Saturn design element can be applied to a sporty medium sedan.''
Lajdziak says it's the harbinger of a ''new generation of emotionally compelling Saturn vehicles. It's the kind of vehicle that perfectly supports Saturn's firm commitment to provide great customer service combined with equally outstanding vehicles."
Clay Dean, GM's director of vehicle design, says the exterior styling of the Saturn Aura is fluid, muscular and powerful, with European design cues and a sense of technical harmony. ''As is the case with the Saturn Sky, Aura features sculpted surfaces and flowing horizontal lines, creating a dynamic feel - a sense of power about to be unleashed.''
