We've been hearing about this car for the better part of the last two years, and according to some it will be worth it.
The new information tells us that the final production Toyota FT-86 (Scion FR-S in North America) will resemble the original concept unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show in October of 2009. This is good news as the latest iterations, such as the one seen in Geneva earlier this year, were far too over the top style-wise, resembling the LFA.
The process from concept to reality has involved numerous engineers from such institutions as Yamaha (from the MR2), Prius and LFA programs, not to mention some members from the original AE-86's team. Engineers from Subaru’s WRC and STI divisions also got their hands dirty on this one.
Some of the coolest features built into this car are the presence of enough room under the hood for an engine-bay modification-free swap of a turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine and a dashboard which is able to house roll-cage bars sans cutting. Genius and booyah!
The Subaru-inspired, Boxer 4-cylinder engine remains, however, it has been reworked from A-to-Z. This is where Yamaha came into play.
Moto Miwa, the founder of Club4AG, a website dedicated to Toyota enthusiasts, is the source of these new pieces of information on the FR-S. According to him, this car will revolutionize the car business as the BMW 2002, Volkswagen Beetle and 1965 Ford Mustang did.
Big words for sure, but we can't wait to get our hands on it to find out for ourselves.
